Welcome

Welcome to our website! The Kangaroo Point Neighbourhood Watch group has been established for over ten years and we have built up a strong sense of community. The active involvement of residents at the Point has greatly contributed to the high standard of safety and amenities and the low crime rates in our area.

We meet bi-monthly on Monday evenings and encourage residents to come along, to get to know their neighbours better, to share ideas, and raise any issues regarding Kangaroo Point. At our meetings we look at crime matters and concerns re safety, security and matters of public interest. We often start with a guest speaker on a topic of local or community interest.  Our local councillor, Cr Helen Abrahams and our local Police liaison officer from Dutton Park police attend most meetings.

If you cannot attend meetings and have any issues or concerns, please contact us at info@kangaroopointnw.com. You can browse our website for Meeting Minutes, our regular Newsletter, our Heritage Walk Guide, Crime Bulletins, Police Contacts and other articles of interest. We look forward to meeting you and/or hearing from you.

2012 meeting dates:

13 February, 16 April, 18 June, 13 August (inc AGM), 8 October, 10 December.

Qld Heritage Festival Kangaroo Point Guided Heritage Walks

Saturday April 21 and  Sunday April 22

Some very interested visitors and locals thoroughly enjoyed the guided walks conducted by David and Christa. They took a fascinating walk back in time as they followed the route of our Kangaroo Point Heritage Walk booklet to the historic and heritage-listed sites in our beautiful Kangaroo Point Peninsula, Brisbane’s earliest suburban residential area.

Sunday 25 March – National Neighbour Day Picnic 11am – 2pm

Captain Burke Park, new beach end (eastern end) opposite No 1 Holman Street

A small group of locals braved the chilly winds and post-election weariness and enjoyed a picnic and a chat together with a great selection of shared food.

Clean Up Australia Day, 4 March- This year Captain Burke Park, the beach and  mangroves and parks up to Thornton Street ferry terminal were cleaned up by a large group of enthusiastic people from Brisbane Rotary High Rise, Qld Waterways and a few of our own dedicated members. The Point is now looking great thanks to the hard work of all who participated.

Meeting April 16, 2012 – Another great turnout as our eminent guest speaker, historian and author Helen Gregory gave us her fascinating perspective on the history of KP in a talk entitled “Puzzling the Point’s Past”. The talk was very well received by our appreciative members and the enthusiastic questions were a true indication of the high level of interest that exists in the history of our area. It was a great way to mark the beginning of the 2012 Qld Heritage Festival.

We also welcomed our new Police Liaison Officer, Constable Bernie Nyan who takes over from our well liked Andy O’Day who has been promoted to Senior Constable and is now working on other projects. Bernie gave us an update on crime in the area and reminded everyone to take more care about personal and community safety. See the meeting minutes for a more detailed report of the meeting.

Meeting February 13, 2012.We had a great turnout to the first meeting of the year and   welcomed several new members. Guest speaker Ben Wilson of Bicycle Qld spoke about the responsibilities of cyclists and pedestrians on public roads and shared pathways. After a lively discussion and many questions everyone agreed that a harmonious relationship between cyclists and pedestrians can only be achieved by a change in attitude of all concerned.  See the meeting minutes for more details (follow link on the left).  After the meeting many attendees enjoyed a lovely dinner in Deery’s Courtyard, it was a great way to continue forging closer community ties.

Meeting November 2011: We heard from Dr. Bui about the proposal to set up a Vietnamese Memorial in Capt. Burke Park.  Construction of this has now begun. (February 2012).

Police are the public and the public are the police: the police being

only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention

to duties which are incumbent on every citizen, in the interests of

     community welfare and existence.

This site has been developed to provide relevant and timely information about Neighbourhood Watch and Crime Prevention, in the Kangaroo Point suburb of Brisbane, Australia. The development and maintenance of the site has been in part funded by a grant from Brisbane City Council.

Successful Neighbourhood Watch relies on good communication between residents and their local Police.  This site contains information about the areas serviced by the groups, co-ordinator's roles and contact details.

Police provide information about local criminal activity, (including comfits and photographs), which may be useful in solving crime.  Anyone who has information on any crime mentioned, or who may be able to identify any comfit, is asked to contact the Police Liaison Officer who is listed in each groups list of co-ordinators.

A good neighbour looks beyond the external accidents and discerns

those inner qualities that make all men human and therefore, brothers.
